If I were to attempt building anything in Minecraft PE without any planning, it would likely end in disaster, just like all my previous efforts. However, when the top-notch builder Springstof embarks on a project with no blueprint, he manages to blend architectural flair with the skill of a master chef. Seriously!
Welcome to the Citadel – a testament to European monuments and architecture from various regions and eras, as well as an unfinished creation that showcases remarkable freeform artistry. Springstof, also known as Jesse, looked at a blank canvas of blocks and immediately dove into constructing a towering structure adorned with spires, a bridge, and stunning surrounding scenery in MCPE.
“The concept of the Citadel was truly a spontaneous idea,” says Springstof. “I’ve always wanted to create worlds without functional constraints. Designing survival maps or PvP arenas requires foresight. You need to think practically about layout and features. A few weeks ago, I decided to build something for myself. No specific goal, no functionality—just pure creativity.”
The entire endeavor is purely improvisational. Springstof constructs in Minecraft Pocket Edition without any layout plans, reference images, or expectations of what should emerge.
“Everything comes together as I build,” he tells me.
The result is a monolithic structure that could fit right into any Tolkien novel. Springstof mentions that although he didn’t intend for this to happen, the castle appears influenced by numerous styles that would never coexist in reality. “Honestly, the whole structure doesn’t make much sense. The great hall has Gothic and Scandinavian influences, the large tower reflects Baroque elements, while the smaller towers don’t seem to adhere to any conventions, as far as I can tell. On the other hand, the grand vestibule and wall have a distinctly medieval appearance.”
With that said, Springstof adds, “Any student of historical architecture would probably lose sleep over the multitude of things done incorrectly in this construction.”
This impressive creation emerged without a clear intention to start. Nevertheless, Springstof is an experienced builder. In fact, he has released five survival maps for Minecraft Realms over the past two years. “I really wanted each of them to be unique,” he shares with me. His maps include a rural village, a lumberjack’s hideout, an orc camp, and a meteorite crash site—a pretty extensive repertoire for a solo builder.
“I absolutely love creating things, and in Minecraft PE, there are no limits to that,” explains Springstof. “I enjoy building, and I strive to make something unique in every project I undertake.” His portfolio reflects this ambition, as each subsequent project becomes more ambitious than the last.
