If you are an avid explorer of the World Ocean or simply someone well-versed in underwater happenings, you might have come across the Axolotl. Never heard of it? Neither had I!
Fortunately, I know some brilliant minds who inform me that the Axolotl is a water-dwelling amphibian (and sadly, an endangered species) native to Mexico. The most astonishing feature of this creature is its ability to regenerate its limbs. Wow, I wish I could do that! I can barely manage my hair 🙁
Anyway, the Axolotl has now gained another claim to fame. Generously provided by the American Institute of Monterrey in Mexico and Minecraft YouTuber Rabahrex, this is the latest winning design for coral crafters—our project aimed at aiding the world’s oceans!
What exactly is Coral Crafters? With the Aquatic update, we are filling the oceans of Minecraft PE with huts, shipwrecks, deep-sea trenches, fish, turtles, dolphins, and vibrant coral reefs.
In reality, however, the situation is quite different: climate change, destructive fishing practices, and water pollution are decimating the incredible marine life on our planet. Coral reefs, one of nature’s most precious wonders, are under threat.
Coral reefs provide habitat for around two million species—about a quarter of all marine life. We are just beginning to uncover the secrets of these remarkable organisms, yet according to estimates from the World Wildlife Fund, nearly a third of coral reefs worldwide are already damaged. If current trends continue, we may lose 60% of the world’s corals within the next few decades.
We can make a difference—with YOUR help!
Our plan involves establishing six Biorock structures, an innovative technology that promotes coral growth up to five times faster than usual, off the coast of Cozumel, Mexico—an area where coral reefs have suffered from bleaching and hurricane damage. The first three designs feature iconic characters from past and future updates: Alex, Steve, and the sea turtle. The remaining three projects will be determined by our community!
Logdotzip (hey, I actually wrote his name down this time!) created three projects, then let YOU decide which one will become part of Minecraft Pocket Edition! You can learn more about this here.
StacyPlays rallied her community and gave us a much-needed boost! This helps us work better and create something new!
Rabahrex is a Minecraft YouTuber who collaborated with both us and the American Institute in Monterrey, Mexico. Rabahrex and Microsoft mentor Patricia Romero worked with 18 students (aged seven to ten), who were divided into groups to brainstorm six projects.
Then came the tough part—choosing a winner! “I was speechless after seeing all the projects made by each team,” says Rabahrex. “Everything was so beautiful and creative.”
But ultimately, a winner was chosen—let’s give a round of applause for the Axolotl! Oh wait, she can’t do any of those things.
Ah, but it can regrow limbs, making it the perfect structure to help promote coral growth—that’s precisely why the clever students at the Monterrey Institute selected it!

A huge thank you to Rabahrex and the students of the Institute of Monterrey. We will keep you updated on developments regarding the project over the coming years, so you can witness how our coral takes shape as we progress together!
