The list of blocks in the world of Minecraft Pocket Edition that have yet to be featured in the “Block of the Week” series is noticeably short. We are nearing the end. Finally, we would like to discuss a block that you’ve been eagerly anticipating. And that is the Command Block! What else could you expect?
As the name suggests, command blocks serve the purpose of executing commands for specific actions. What kind of commands? Virtually anything you desire – setting spawn points, teleporting players in Minecraft PE, awarding achievements, changing game modes, banning players, affecting player status, altering the world, and adding any number of items to your inventory. And that’s just a small fraction. The complete list can be found on the Wiki repository at Minecraft PE.
If you’re a fan of survival mode in Minecraft PE, you might consider these features as cheating. And you’d be correct: command blocks are specifically designed for creative mode and map developers. Notably, Jeb, a well-known game developer, announced the addition of command blocks in 2012 with the update 1.4.2 – Pretty Scary Update, which also introduced anvils, flower pots, and carrots on sticks.
Starting from version 1.9 Minecraft, there are three types of command blocks available in the game. The Impulse block – orange – executes once when activated. The Chain command block – green – runs only when the command block pointing to it has executed. Lastly, the Repeating block – purple – performs one command per session.
The interface of command blocks includes several options beyond selecting the type of block itself: conditional command blocks execute only if the preceding command was successful, while unconditional ones always run their command upon activation. You can also set them to activate only when powered by redstone or to operate continuously.
By utilizing various combinations and arrangements of command blocks and redstone, you’ll find that you can create virtually anything. From lotteries, trading systems, passwords, teleports, prisons, weather devices, obstacles, traps, to even houses that are much larger inside than they appear outside! Find the right tutorial and start building some truly amazing contraptions!
You may be reading this and thinking that command blocks are quite a complex feature. To some extent, you’re right—they’re intended for more experienced users of Minecraft PE. But there’s good news: the upcoming Aquatic update will simplify the use of command blocks significantly, making them much more accessible and user-friendly!
