Minecraft has set a new milestone in the gaming world by surpassing 300 million copies sold, solidifying its position as the most popular game in history. This achievement places it significantly ahead of its closest competitor, Grand Theft Auto V, which lags behind by a remarkable 100 million copies.
Over its 15-year journey, Minecraft has not only captured the hearts of millions of players globally but also continues to lead the charge in the gaming industry. “Sales exceeding 300 million copies is an outcome we could only dream of when we first started building with blocks,” says Helen Chang, head of Mojang Studios.
This announcement was made during Minecraft Live 2023, where the community gathered to learn about the latest news and updates for the game, as well as participate in a vote for the addition of a new creature — options include a crab, an armadillo, or a penguin.
Sales of Minecraft significantly outpace those of many other entertainment forms, including Michael Jackson’s best-selling album “Thriller,” which sold 70 million copies, and the PlayStation 2 console, with sales reaching 155 million units. The second best-selling video game, Grand Theft Auto V, has achieved 185 million copies, far exceeding these figures.
The list of the top 10 best-selling games now stands as follows:
- Minecraft — 300 million;
- Grand Theft Auto V — 185 million;
- Tetris (EA) — 100 million;
- Wii Sports — 82.9 million;
- PUBG: Battlegrounds — 75 million;
- Mario Kart 8 / Deluxe — 63.9 million;
- Super Mario Bros. — 58 million;
- Red Dead Redemption 2 — 55 million;
- Overwatch — 50 million;
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — 50 million.
