Disney has transformed our perception of pirates, hasn’t it? Nowadays, when someone mentions the word “pirates,” you’re likely to think of Captain Jack Sparrow and that guy whose beard is made not of hair but of squids. Your mind won’t conjure images of old-fashioned pirates suffering from scurvy, accompanied by parrots or missing limbs. In contemporary times, fictional pirates seem too polished, lacking the salty essence of ocean gales, spending far too much time on land in Minecraft.
A more modern interpretation of pirate life has been crafted by builder Tyssen Shettler, also known as Firun_Brand, who serves as a listener for the Aria Creations Build Team. Although he remains situated on a Caribbean island, it’s precisely where piracy thrived. Ultimately, Tyssen’s imagined pirate paradise in Minecraft Bedrock is far more vibrant and sci-fi inspired than Disney’s portrayal.
In Tyssen’s pirate cove, spaceships of various sizes orbit the island, while at the heart of the city stands a grand domed structure, presumably housing some fabulously wealthy pirate king. The entire design bursts with bright colors—no black-and-white skulls, grim crusaders, or other pirate clichés. These are modern pirates evolving together in their own world, albeit isolated from the outside realm!
However, the colorful appearance of the pirate island isn’t all there is to see at first glance. “The project was my attempt to envision how pirates might look in the future. But not to depict a glorious, pristine future we imagine through sci-fi thinking; rather, a dirty future where the planet continues to be exploited, and everything around becomes filthy and brown,” says Tyssen.
If you take a closer look at the pirate ships, you’ll notice they appear constructed from discarded scraps long sent for recycling. For instance, one rocket looks like it’s assembled from whatever can be found at the back of your local supermarket. The palace at the center is beautiful, yet it reflects the “former wealth of the city,” rather than its current state.
The homes occupying most of the city are built closely together or stacked atop one another, utilizing every inch of this tiny patch of land in Minecraft Pocket Edition. Lush tropical jungles flank both sides, providing pirates ample cover to hide their loot. “The toughest part of the project was making the island feel alive. It took quite a bit of time and numerous small details to achieve that,” shares the builder. Tyssen spent two weeks completing the assembly, dedicating four to eight hours each day adding character and detail to what he describes as a “sci-fi/slum aesthetic.”
“My favorite detail is the little spacecraft flying just above the water,” he remarks. These tiny vessels leave white trails on the surface, resembling dust clouds left by ground vehicles in Star Wars, creating an impression that they’re endlessly searching for treasures to steal. Larger ships circle the city, with enough space on their hulls to conveniently display their model names.
“Pirate Bay is my favorite Minecraft project I’ve ever created. The goal was to independently build my largest project and gain recognition within the Aria Creations Build Team.” Fortunately, his vision paid off, and Tyssen was accepted into the team in early September! Congratulations, Firun_Brand!
