Lost Journals (Part 2)

Wow, this is absolutely terrible!!! Oh, I apologize; I know you don’t appreciate it when I start articles with confusing statements. However, this time I couldn’t help myself! I just read one of the most horrifying scenes in the Lost Journals. This is the third official novel of Minecraft, which was released just a couple of days ago in the USA and the UK.

Recalling all the magazines and books we’ve ever discussed, this one stands out as the most enigmatic. The identity of the author behind the lost journals remains a mystery. Could it have been someone from the Minecraft Bedrock content team? Or perhaps it was me…? Hmm, or maybe I was simply too engrossed in playing “Into The Breach” to finish this article on time? Clearly, the answer to this question is the most apparent part of this entire puzzling tale.

However, it wasn’t my fault! One day, I found myself reminiscing about how amazing the game Into the Breach was. Now, we have decided to share more information with our readers about the book “The Lost Journals” and conduct an interview with its author. Before diving into the interview, you can get a better understanding of the context by reading the first article about this book.

I: Could you tell us a bit about yourself and how you became a writer?

Mur Lafferty: As a child, I was an insatiable reader, but one day I began exploring science fiction and fantasy written by women (such as Anne McCaffrey and Madeleine L’Engle). Their stories often focused on the lives of women and girls, which sparked my interest in writing. I studied English in college, and about ten years after graduating, I decided to pursue it seriously. In addition to books, I’ve also contributed articles for magazines, role-playing games, video games, and serialized podcasts.

I: What can you tell us about “The Lost Journals”?

Mur Lafferty: The storyline of the Lost Journals follows three children who set out to locate the author of their torn journal. However, during their quest, they encounter unexpected challenges that go beyond their initial expectations. The narrative explores themes of friendship, family, terrifying sorcerers, a loyal wolf, and vast crowds of people.Lost Journals (Part 2) Lost Journals (Part 2) I: Do you often play games?

Moor Lafferty: Oh yes, I believe I spend too much time gaming. If you were to ask those around me about it, they would all undoubtedly say, “Yes.” My list of games includes: Minecraft, Star Rose Valley, Rune Factory 4, Skyrim, Pokémon, Intruder, Sky Without People, Observation, Dragon Age, FTL, and so on. I could keep this list going indefinitely.

I: What inspired you to write a book set in the Minecraft Bedrock universe?

Moor Lafferty: I think that this game is the best choice for books because it has few plot lines. This allows almost every one of them to be fully explored and showcase all aspects. Of course, this is assuming you adhere to the game’s rules.

I: How did you manage the constraints that require you to adhere to the game’s rules?

Mur Lafferty: There are certain aspects of the game that I genuinely enjoy, and I was happy to incorporate them into my book. For instance, the ability to breed sheep of various colors, summon my favorite wolf, and teleport him elsewhere. Additionally, I find it amusing to maintain a balance in creating absurd monsters, particularly a horde of chicken jockeys that are both entertaining and terrifying!

I: Some passages in the book feature handwritten ink blots that obscure parts of the text. Could you elaborate on this stylistic choice?

Moor Lafferty: The protagonists in the book face significant challenges when it comes to deciphering the journals, as the original author never anticipated that anyone would read them. Consequently, there was no concern for legibility in the handwriting. I aimed to capture this on the pages, ensuring that the book contained those enigmatic elements that I envisioned. I’m thrilled that the designers assisted me in bringing this concept to life and executed everything exactly as I imagined.

I: Thank you very much for the interview, Moor Lafferty!
