Dragons will be here. This phrase captivates everyone, regardless of context: whether it’s about the dragon in our favorite game Minecraft Pocket Edition, ancient myths from various cultures, medieval maps, tabletop games, or popular series – dragons have always fascinated us. They are a timeless obsession, so it’s no surprise that today’s project revolves around this theme.
We present to you the creation of Punky the Steampunk Dragon by user Khalester. And believe me, this is far from an ordinary flying lizard. The dragon features a mechanical design, a rusty finish, terrifying teeth, and fiery breath.
And a monocle.
“My friend strongly urged me to add glasses to this project. But you can imagine how ridiculous they would look on such a fearsome creature. However, the dragon’s face seemed rather empty. While exploring various steampunk dragon creations, I decided that instead of glasses, a monocle would be more fitting. It turned out to be a brilliant idea. The monocle adds a touch of aristocracy to the dragon,” the creator explains.
But the monocle isn’t the only accessory that enhances the dragon’s style. Pay attention to the details: tanks filled with some liquid, pistons and tubes, numerous gears. Although the dragon boasts these intricate elements, much of it is the author’s improvisation.
“I approached this project without any specific plan. Initially, I created a simple dragon shape, then started thinking about what to add for a steampunk flair. The hands and legs proved particularly challenging due to my limited skills in constructing organic forms. Most of my time was spent on the neck and body, as they contained a variety of details. Overall, the project took about four weeks,” shares the author.
Punky isn’t Khalester’s first dragon. There was also a dragon named Mors – a skeletal dragon with remnants of flesh between its wings. Khalester has a special passion for these ancient beings.
“Creating dragons wasn’t an attempt to build organic structures for me. I simply wanted to shift my focus and create something new. I continued working on regular builds until they came along. My love is dragons,” reveals Khalester.
The author is well-versed in all types of dragons. He has experimented with various kinds and sizes. “It all began when I played Warhammer 40K, which sparked my interest in these creatures. That’s when I encountered the Zombie Dragon, marking the start of my creative journey. I tried constructing different versions of dragon heads before settling on my favorites.”
How did these beings enchant our creator? “I started playing Minecraft PE back in 2011. Right away, I began building in creative mode in Minecraft PE. Many companies hired me for small projects. Additionally, I crafted my own creations, primarily consisting of medieval buildings.”
Last summer, my friends inspired me to create a dragon head. I had often drawn them before, but now I decided to test my skills in-game.
For those users who enjoyed our first dragon, the creator wishes to share his wisdom and experience so you can craft your own flying beast.
1. First, you need an idea and a rough sketch. Gather information on how your creature might look. Browse various images online to kickstart your construction.
2. It’s essential to thoroughly study dragon anatomy. This way, you’ll be able to recreate one without relying on any literature. You may encounter minor challenges since dragons don’t actually exist, and their anatomy is purely speculative. Nevertheless, studying dragons alongside real animals will significantly enhance your drawing or crafting skills in Minecraft PE.
3. If you’re skilled at drawing, it will aid you in building as well. Start by creating the dragon’s form, refining all proportions and dimensions, then move on to the finer details. Finally, comes the painting process. The author expresses special thanks to user Phalladius for assistance with the coloring.
I truly hope you follow in the footsteps of the bravest dragon conquerors and decide to create something genuinely magnificent. Of course, if you can handle flames and high temperatures.
