No experience can compare to visiting a bustling metropolis! Enchanting skyscrapers rise above the clouds. The hustle and bustle of people rushing to work fills the air. One of them asked to take a look at my wallet. Sure, friend, go ahead and check it out!
No, I need to explore a better city. A city like Mattupolis.
Mattupolis is a city crafted by a 20-year-old builder named Matthias, or MattuFIN as he calls himself. He dedicated six years to creating this vast and magnificent city, which continues to expand. His inspiration came from the cities of Vancouver and Seattle in Canada and the USA. His goal was to build the largest and most realistic city possible in Minecraft Pocket Edition.
“I really love big cities and metropolises,” Matthias admits, “I miss that vibe outdoors, so I wanted to capture that feeling in Minecraft PE. Vancouver inspired me greatly: it beautifully combines urban environments with natural landscapes. I aimed to bring all of that into the game.”
The city built by our creator could indeed be called a metropolis due to its incredible size. Measuring from one end to the other, you can count about two thousand blocks in one direction and another two and a half in the other. This entire area is filled with all the essential elements of a megacity.
“I’ve never kept track of the buildings. There might be hundreds, or maybe even thousands,” Matthias claims.
However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. As a wise person once said, “Any grand project in Minecraft PE starts with a single block,” and Matthias’s project began back in 2012. He and his friends embarked on this ambitious creation. Each had specific ideas for development, leading to the construction of one of the largest cities in Minecraft PE!
The city was named Greenfield and gained considerable popularity among various circles. Initially, they intended to build something small and had no idea it would lead to such a monumental project.
Although the city steadily grew, the developers lacked a clear plan for future expansion. Eventually, they started losing interest in their creation, and soon the city faded away, much like its mayor.
“I began to think about starting over until I realized how attached I had become to Mattupolis. It was then decided to demolish most of the buildings and keep only the most unique and selected ones.”
Afterward, Matthias took on the roles of chief engineer, architect, and builder of his city. It became a sort of hobby—he devoted several hours each week to building during his free time from studies.
“Constructing a single building can take around 30 minutes to an hour,” Matthias states, “But if you want to add details and uniqueness, it takes much longer. Each of my buildings took me a week or more.”
When the creator adds a new district or section to his city, he always begins with the infrastructure of the area. The builder must draft sketches of all structures while categorizing everything into residential, commercial, and industrial zones.
“Google Maps has been immensely helpful in working on the project. Exploring different streets in any city helps measure and understand the scale of constructions, which is hard to achieve just by looking at pictures online. Some streets even provide insights into interiors, making the job easier.
As I navigate through streets on Google, I note levels not only of architecture but also of the streets themselves. My city boasts over 150 very tall buildings, along with towers, large parks, shopping centers, public transport stops, numerous shops, IKEA, and even a few McDonald’s. How about a library or a railway? Everything you know about big cities can be found in Mattupolis.
“At this point, I have a clear vision of my future work. I believe the project will be completed within the next two years, based on my available time. However, the city isn’t even one percent finished—just like real-life cities.” – Matthias asserts.
Working on the project has taught Matthias a lot about architecture and construction overall, leading to unexpected outcomes.
“I’ve submitted applications for entrance exams and am preparing for them, aiming to enroll in university. I’m not sure exactly how Mattupolis will impact my life, but one thing I can say for certain: without Minecraft PE and Mattupolis, I definitely wouldn’t have applied to architecture school.”
Thank you so much, Matthias, we are thrilled for you! Now excuse me, I need to catch that thief who stole my wallet. But with my new car, I’ll deal with him in no time! Oh, a new acquaintance wants to help me drive. But wait… NO, NOT AGAIN!
