Underwater combat in Minecraft can feel like a challenging math exam: it’s quite difficult, slow-paced, and the outcomes can be dire. Fortunately, with the Aquatic update, developers introduced an item that makes defeating underwater foes much easier. This week’s featured item is the trident!
The trident is truly a gem; its attack damage matches that of a diamond sword, while its durability is comparable to iron. So if you’ve managed to acquire this fantastic weapon, make sure to use it wisely. If you haven’t got one yet, now is the perfect time to hunt for it! The only way to obtain it is by defeating a drowned. However, the chances of getting a trident are slim. Firstly, not all drowned carry one, and secondly, even if they do, there’s no guarantee you’ll receive it as loot. Therefore, rushing into a crowd hoping to collect multiple tridents isn’t the best strategy; at best, you might end up with just 1 or 2. The trident has two types of attacks: ranged and melee. You can wield it like a sword or, by holding down the right mouse button, throw it like an arrow. If the trident hits a mob, it will land nearby, and if it strikes a block, it will get stuck in it. In either case, you can approach the landing spot to retrieve your weapon. Tridents thrown by drowned cannot be picked up. The same applies to arrows shot by skeletons.
Another aspect that we must definitely highlight is enchanting. Tridents can be enhanced with the enchantments of durability and mending, but their uniqueness lies elsewhere, as other weapon types in Minecraft are also susceptible to these spells. The special feature of tridents is their own unique enchantments, some of which can work together.
The Loyalty enchantment causes a thrown trident to return to the player after a few seconds. Impaling deals extra damage to underwater mobs during both melee and ranged attacks. When using the Riptide enchantment, the trident pulls the player along, functioning only when submerged or during rain. Lastly, there’s Channeling. This spell summons several lightning strikes upon hitting a mob, but only during thunderstorms. Tridents from the real world are most famously recognized in the West. They were utilized for fishing and combat in Ancient Greece and Rome. Gladiators of that era wielding tridents proudly bore the title of “retiarius.” It’s also worth mentioning the myths of that time, where tridents were often linked to sea deities across various cultures.
The Hindu deity Shiva also wielded a trident, which was intended for combating evil. In Daoism, it symbolized the three sacred elements of the Daoist triad. Tridents were also utilized in Korean martial arts during the 17th and 18th centuries. As for modern times, they can primarily be found in fishing.
