The majority of the new biomes in the Nether were introduced in Minecraft to enhance the vibrancy of this fiery dimension. Two biomes—the crimson and warped forests—align with this idea and fit well into the dark, oppressive aesthetic of the Nether.
But do all biomes truly make the Nether feel more alive? There is actually one exception that contrasts sharply with the others by adding an air of gloom and desolation. This biome is known as the basalt deltas!
“During the development of the four biomes, the team approached me with a question about whether I wanted to be involved in this project. At that time, I wasn’t even aware that there was another biome beyond the four I knew,” shares developer Java Felix Jones.
The distinction of basalt deltas lies in the fact that they were not premeditated or meticulously designed. They lack a specific layout and other essential features, as they are essentially formed from leftover materials creating a biome. The update for the Nether was intended to introduce only three biomes: the soul sand valley, warped forest, and crimson forest.
The only preparation for the basalt deltas was the prototype code. Almost our entire team worked on it, yet there were no assurances that this biome would make its way into Minecraft. However, they succeeded. In the eleventh snapshot released in April 2020, basalt deltas were introduced. This barren biome became the final piece that made the Nether feel complete.
“I believe that both the gaming community and our team sensed something was missing in the new update. We needed that last puzzle piece to complete the picture. Moreover, we had a new material—blackstone—and it needed a fitting place. Another biome seemed like a natural solution for its introduction.”
The basalt deltas are primarily composed of rocky mountains, interspersed with flowing lava rivers. The main material found here is basalt, but as Felix mentioned, there is also black stone present. This stone is excellent for crafting tools and constructing durable structures. Navigating through the basalt deltas can be quite challenging. The mountainous terrain and hidden pits may pose risks to inexperienced travelers. However, if you proceed with caution and attentiveness, the basalt deltas will reveal a wealth of ores and resources that are remnants of volcanic rock. In addition, you will also encounter hell stones, gravel, lava cubes, glowing stones, and Nether quartz.
When it comes to various forms of wildlife, the basalt deltas are quite lacking in diversity. There are fungi that thrive on lava blocks and striders that inhabit the shores of the lava seas. However, if you ascend to the peaks of the deltas, you’ll encounter numerous phantoms. They regard these gloomy areas as their territory and do not welcome uninvited guests.
Nonetheless, the basalt deltas are rich in building materials, and there are significantly fewer hostile mobs compared to other regions of the Nether in Minecraft Bedrock. Therefore, it’s wise to stock up on supplies and head there for resource gathering. If you also construct a home with protection against ghasts and set up a small farm, you can confidently make this place your residence!
