For many years, the builder qmagnet has collaborated with friends to create vast and unique maps for Minecraft. One of his latest creations is called Diversity 3, which has quickly become the most popular among all his maps. It can be described as a “buffet of game modes that have gained popularity throughout the history of the game.” If you’re in search of an adventure filled with an engaging storyline, mind-bending puzzles, or a stroll through breathtaking landscapes, this is the map you need! Unlike a real buffet, here you can sample everything in any quantity without ever feeling unwell. Simply fantastic!
Qmagnet started developing Diversity 3 six years ago. “I was inspired by the popular map ‘Collect the Monument’ and wanted to create something of my own, like a map where players had to conquer various game modes. No one had done anything like that before, so it seemed like a fantastic idea.”
Did he achieve his vision? Check out the video below! After many years spent on Diversity maps 1 and 2, along with numerous projects and builds, qmagnet suddenly stopped creating and vanished from Minecraft Bedrock. However, something eventually drew him back to his passion – parrots!
“My children asked me to include them in my test map,” he explains. “Then everything started to spiral, and I began integrating new mechanics and features into the builds, trying once again to bend the game to my will. Before I knew it, I found myself working on a new project for Diversity 3. I blame the parrots.”
Well done, little birds! What a charming little house! Let’s just say it’s in a less than charming neighborhood. This train seems to be quite the fan of Uncharted 2, judging by how precariously it hangs on the tracks. Thanks, but we’ll stick to walking.
There’s something FISHY about this look! Haha, I hope she doesn’t eat me…
Initially, qmagnet worked solo, keeping his project under wraps. However, he soon realized that he needed assistance to move forward. Even after bringing in extra help, they remained very discreet from others.
“I found Adam,” qmagnet tells me. “When he joined the team, it felt like a breath of fresh air. At first, I was a bit anxious because his work ethic was simply relentless, but eventually, I got used to it and relaxed. I like to refer to Adam as ‘the guy who saved Diversity 3 from oblivion.’
Adam, better known in the community as damDJM or “the guy who saved Diversity 3 from demise,” expresses that his friend’s words are very kind. He elaborates: “When I joined the team in May 2018, the map was somewhat dormant and progress was sluggish.” Having previously seen other sections of the popular map, he felt thrilled to receive an invitation to be part of the team. “Over the next few months, the team made significant strides in developing the map.”
The space section! The scale of the map is truly impressive; it’s no wonder it took so long!
Adam and qmagnet weren’t the only ones involved in the map’s development. Another team member, Kwa, was responsible for creating the introduction – the very first thing players encounter upon entering.
“After discussing the map’s future with qmagnet, I realized he was completely receptive to new ideas and my suggestions. This thrilled me immensely, as I didn’t have to stick to a rigid script; I simply built and enjoyed the process.”
Collaborating closely, qmagnet and Kwa set the tone for the map. “Our primary concept was that Diversity 3 is a project that has been lost. Qmagnet had already envisioned most of it in his mind, and our task was to enhance this vision and bring it into Minecraft Pocket Edition. We aimed to create something both anarchic and overgrown, yet simultaneously open and welcoming, which is why a floating island was perfect for our build.” The best way to travel between islands? Of course, it’s the phantom boat!
Kwa shared that the process of creating node islands was quite challenging and mysterious for him. “I kept asking others questions like ‘What’s missing here?’ or ‘Why isn’t this working?’, which helped me steer my work in the right direction, from setting up the block to constructing large structures. When it came to the mechanics of the island nodes, qmagnet would come to my rescue and somehow make everything work perfectly. Honestly, I still can’t grasp how he managed to pull it off and get it just right!”
Another builder, RenderXR, who was instrumental in developing much of the Elytra branch, emphasized the significance of reusing the same action in Minecraft. “You shouldn’t start building unless you’re confident that you can refine and clarify your idea,” he states. After some experimentation, he opted to make certain elements “more focused on exploration and navigating open areas, while the primary goal of others is quick speed and agility in narrow tunnels.”
Jigarbov, another builder, has crafted a boss battle arena. He aimed to create something distinct from the previous Diversity maps, thus he “focused on narrating the essence of Minecraft Bedrock.”
“I have always viewed this series of maps as a compilation of all game genres,” – clarifies Jigarbov. “Without diving into too many spoilers, I aimed to explore various themes: survival, crafting, and of course, the battle against a colossal antagonist that overshadows his entire existence.” Ooooh, who could this gigantic antagonist be? Personally, I hope it’s a giant parrot. Do I understand what is happening in this image? No! Do I like the image? Yes!
Qmagnet has decided to shift its focus from individual components of the assembly to a broader perspective, aiming to assist and guide leaders in their design decision-making processes. This approach has enabled them to recognize not only their own contributions but also those of others. Jigarbov mentions that his favorite aspect of the map is the Escape branch created by ColdFusion, as it “continues to grow and improve while incorporating numerous ideas and possibilities.”
“Whenever I think about escape maps, I always consider the challenges that arise during gameplay,” says ColdFusion. It’s evident that the concept of designing a map filled with traps and towers of doom to engage players in Minecraft holds great potential.
However, a map like Diversity 3 requires more than just creation. Two other individuals, Adrian and QwertyuiopThePie, contributed significantly to the behind-the-scenes coding efforts. Adrian provided me with an extensive list of tasks he accomplished, such as populating the underground city with procedurally generated buildings and designing parkour branches on rooftops. “This was made possible thanks to one of my sons. He played a crucial role in the design and testing phases of the map; his assistance was invaluable since none of us are as skilled at parkour as he is.” The team also acknowledged a builder named Nudlor for his contributions to the parkour sections.
“Instead of tweaking functions and commands within the game, I can spend nearly all my time in a text editor,” Qwerty explains. “As a result, the process of creating command mechanics can be done without even launching the game.” Essentially, from a layman’s perspective, he’s performing computer magic! After completing such a massive project (spanning 21 months), the builders are eager to share their experiences regarding the hard work involved. They take great pride in what they have achieved. Adrian summarizes how they managed to collaborate effectively over such an extended period: “Qmagnet is a smart guy who always has a backup plan or some clever tricks up his sleeve. But I believe his true talent lies in assembling a team of highly skilled and complementary individuals!”
Will qmagnet leave Minecraft Bedrock again after completing his map trilogy? “I find it strange to even consider finishing my construction now. I once tried to step away from the game, but realized that Minecraft won’t let me go; I have to be here.”
“Diversity 3 is one of my all-time favorite maps. A large, cohesive team and the result of their relentless effort. I believe there will always be something to inspire me, even if it’s not Diversity maps; something new will come along.”
Sounds amazing! After all, who else would create such incredible maps? Let’s hope this giant parrot doesn’t learn to talk and take over qmagnet!
