Block of the week: Mycelium

Explore the mysteries of various types of land, especially in Minecraft PE!

What is the largest organism that exists on Earth? What is the oldest living organism on Earth? These questions may have two identical answers. Interestingly, they can be nearly invisible!

As you ascend the forested slopes of the Blue Mountains of Oregon, you might find yourself standing on a slope without losing your balance. This slope covers nearly 9.7 square kilometers—an area about three times larger than Central Park in New York City. The only fungus known as – Honey Mushrooms, part of the honey fungus family, is named for its color rather than its taste.

Mushrooms sprout from dead trees, but each mushroom is just a tiny fragment of a much larger organism, all interconnected by a network of tiny threads that extend through the soil. This network is collectively referred to as mycelium!

Researchers estimate that the mushrooms growing in Oregon are true centenarians, with lifespans ranging from 2400 to 8650 years, which is significantly longer than human existence and all of recorded history!

In Minecraft Pocket Edition, mycelium appears as a dirt block covered with gray-purple threads emitting peculiar particles. Naturally, mycelium blocks can be found in Mushroom Island biomes, and while they aren’t particularly good for cultivating most crops—they can’t even be placed in farmland—mushrooms thrive easily throughout this world at any light level!

Now you understand that any mushroom growing on a mycelium block is likely part of the same fungal network connecting all adjacent mycelium blocks, transforming the humble mushroom into the largest organism in both Minecraft Pocket Edition and the real world!
