The Minecraft community enjoys experimenting with various items and game mechanics. For instance, they previously created conveyor belts using honey blocks and secret doors to safeguard their most valuable possessions. However, it seems they’ve grown tired of crafting practical inventions and have opted to build completely pointless machines instead. As a self-proclaimed leading expert on absurd devices, I hold immense respect for these players and kindly request to be your official guide on this incredible journey!
No Purpose at All!
The first creation I encountered belongs to TheVampireQueen. This machine features a concealed piston that extends from the wall and activates a lever, which is essential for the entire mechanism’s operation.
The image above illustrates the lever itself and the location from where the block emerges. “Nothing complicated,” you might say, but that’s not the case! The mechanisms that make this machine function are hidden behind the wall. Let’s take a peek on the other side and see how it all works. Just because it’s useless doesn’t mean the design is simple. Like all great artists, TheVampireQueen has left his mark. His machine truly deserves admiration for its absurdity.
The user Minecraft known as IOWZBOI has made a significant contribution to the development of useless machines. Specifically, all his devices are designed to eliminate the primary lever, utilizing everything from falling blocks to streams of water that sweep away anything in their path.
Another intriguing concept is a button that releases a creeper, which then detonates the button itself. This approach is much simpler and faster, eliminating the need to construct large systems for complex tasks. However, it does require sacrificing one creeper.
The builder BiC_MC has devised an alternative to the previous system that does not involve a creeper. He has set up a lever that releases dynamite from underground. The dynamite will fly towards the lever and destroy it. It’s a fantastic mechanism for a doorbell!
If we put aside all jokes and ponder the question, “Why do people spend time creating useless machines?” we can find a rather serious answer. The idea is to take a concept to its utmost absurdity by showcasing a complex, intricate mechanism that serves the most pointless function.
To showcase the functionality of his machine, builder feliser opted for glass blocks instead of standard ones. As a result, we observe how pressing a button activates seven mechanisms that set this seemingly pointless system into motion.
The latest creation is truly remarkable! It incorporates nearly all the systems we’ve previously discussed. The “useless box” features 12 piston extenders that push a block outwards by a distance of 12 blocks. It destroys the activation lever, and then using the same piston, all 12 blocks are gradually retracted back. In 2018, YouTuber Mumbo Jumbo took on the challenge of creating the most complex useless machine in Minecraft Bedrock. And he certainly succeeded! The principle remains the same as with all the machines presented earlier: a lever activates the machine, which, during its operation, breaks the lever and returns to its original state. However, Mumbo Jumbo enhanced the design and developed a machine that autonomously chooses one of eight methods to destroy the lever: melting it with lava, washing it away with water, dropping an anvil, and more.
When asked why he created it, Mumbo Jumbo replied: “Useless machines are the embodiment of everything I love about redstone systems. They are quite complex in terms of development, well-structured logically, and completely pointless. These three aspects are essential to me in every build (pointlessness, of course, is also an integral part).”
This observation holds true. While these machines may be deemed useless, their construction allows us to explore the potential of redstone and later apply that knowledge in genuinely useful builds!
