At last, the weather is perfect to showcase the “Rite of Spring” project by Lmaoki!

Technically speaking, spring has already arrived. However, if you had witnessed the snow-covered deserts of Canada after six months of heavy snowfall, you might think that green grass and leaves on trees would never return.

Upon discovering Lmaoki’s creation – Rite of Spring, which bursts with summer hues (I doubt I even remember those shades), I felt a tinge of sadness. The creator drew inspiration from the vibrant beginnings of Disney’s Moana botanical garden and infused his project with greens and corals that literally wrap around the central figure. It’s hard to discern where the hem of the dress ends in the stunning interplay of green and yellow within the water.

The design was specifically crafted for a competition held by the Builder’s Refuge server under the theme “Tree of Utopia”, allowing only two hours for project completion. Unfortunately, my original entry was lost, prompting me to recreate that vision anew. While the initial design featured key elements of “Rite of Spring”, it focused more on forest themes rather than the aquatic imagery presented here.

“The concept was to create an entire world surrounding the statue,” Lmaoki explains, “The figure represents a humanoid tree draped in a royal gown. Much of the inspiration came from the chosen materials and nature.” You can observe this phenomenon in the flow and movement of the dress as it billows like waves behind the woman. The headpiece symbolizes the growth of tall, tubular plants. Additionally, there are sea stars seemingly nestled into the rocks, taking a moment to rest before resuming their daily tasks, whatever those may be for sea stars.

It’s no surprise that capturing the essence of ocean ripples is incredibly challenging in Minecraft Pocket Edition. “The game is blocky and not designed for curves,” Lmaoki laments, “It was very difficult to develop organic shapes, so significant effort and resources were dedicated to creating custom sugar cane in the background and other natural elements.”

The most challenging aspect of the project was the dress. “Fabric itself is a complex modeling object, not just in Minecraft PE,” Lmaoki notes, “It took me about an hour to plan, visualize, and create each piece of fabric for the dress. With my unique technique, results can be quite unpredictable, but I find that beautiful.”

Lmaoki utilizes several plugins for convenience, enabling him to recreate the project without manually placing every block. It’s fair to say that doing everything by hand would have made the project exceedingly labor-intensive and extremely difficult to complete. Even with the use of plugins, it took over three weeks to bring this creation to life.

As with many projects in Minecraft PE, viewing “Rite of Spring” from a distance allows smaller details to blend into intriguing combinations. However, a close-up look at this masterpiece can also provide an engaging experience. Textures become much more pronounced, and the artistic execution revealed through colors and forms becomes clearer. “Yes!” Lmaoki responds, anticipating community questions, “Her dress is indeed made of cactus.”

“The world of Minecraft PE offers numerous green blocks when creating things like plants. I decided to pair green with bright yellow tones from terracotta blocks,” the author remarks. Lmaoki even admits he enjoys such unconventional uses of elements, stating that his favorite part of the project is the cacti: “It’s very strange and out-of-the-box, and that’s what amuses me the most.”

Nevertheless, it’s not accurate to say that Lmaoki became such a creative and talented artist who often shares how long they studied the world of Minecraft Pocket Edition and how much they experimented with various works. “I’ve learned a great deal in Minecraft PE, most of which is pure art that I could have explored in another environment, but the most valuable skill I’ve gained is problem-solving,” the builder shares.

“The things I want to build are very complex to execute with the tools I have, so I need to seek different workarounds or multiple methods to tackle challenges. Experimenting with various approaches leads to amazing outcomes, and while I sometimes face setbacks, extensive experience helps create true wonders.”

Minecraft PE, like any artistic medium, requires skills developed through hard work and learning from other projects. Lmaoki may be the Michelangelo of Minecraft PE, but perhaps you could become a Monet?
