This week, we focused on the very first item introduced in Minecraft—the sapling. It was added in version rd-161348 approximately four days after the initial build was created.
In Minecraft Java Edition, players can still experience some of the earliest versions of the game. To do this, visit the “Installations” page, click on “New,” and then scroll to the bottom of the “Version” section where you will find many of the early game versions. You might be surprised that even back when Minecraft lacked crafting and mining, it was still quite engaging to play. Now, returning to saplings: initially, they were associated with just five blocks: dirt, grass, stone, cobblestone, and planks. Thanks to saplings, nature in Minecraft Bedrock underwent significant changes; however, the key feature of transforming into trees only emerged several months later.
Currently, there are six types of saplings available: oak, birch, spruce, acacia, dark oak, and tropical wood. To grow a tree from these saplings, they must be planted in soil, dirt, podzol, or grass. Sunlight is also a crucial factor, specifically at an eighth level of brightness. It’s essential to leave enough space around the tree, which varies depending on the type of plant.
Aside from these requirements, trees do not need anything else. You can even take some dirt and plant saplings in it within the Nether or the End; everything will thrive well, and after a while, you’ll have a small garden in another dimension.
To obtain a sapling, you need to chop down a tree. From each broken leaf block, you have a five percent chance of receiving a sapling (the chance for tropical trees is half that). If you cannot find a tree for any reason, look for saplings in village chests and woodland mansions. Additionally, wandering traders may sell them to you for five emeralds, but this can be quite expensive. In the real world, saplings are young plants that meet specific criteria. They should not exceed 10 centimeters in thickness and should not be taller than a human’s chest; otherwise, they would be classified as trees.
Many players of Minecraft: Pocket Edition tend to gather a large number of saplings, so here are some tips on how to utilize them. First, you can plant them. If you neglect this task, the area around your home will gradually become barren, which is not only unattractive and environmentally unfriendly but also inconvenient, as you’ll have to travel further for wood. Secondly, you can place saplings in pots, where they will remain small, charming little plants that will bring you joy day after day!
Third tip: planting saplings in a composter with a 30% chance increases the compost level by one, making it quicker to grow new trees. Lastly, saplings can serve as fuel, offering efficiency comparable to sticks.
That’s all there is to it. No need to hoard dozens of saplings in your chests anymore. Let them work for you!
