Every player of Minecraft has, at some point in their gameplay, considered the idea of constructing an underwater city. Theoretically, it sounds amazing—a glass dome surrounded by swimming fish; however, practically speaking, very few have taken on this challenge.
Why is that? Until recently, being submerged was quite perilous. The ocean floor is dark, oxygen levels are low, and the cold water gradually diminishes your ability to mine blocks. However, with the Aquatic update, developers introduced an item that changed everything about the underwater experience in Minecraft. This item is the conduit. Conduits unlock a plethora of new possibilities. When activated, they provide a marine power that combines underwater breathing, night vision effects, and increased mining speed, allowing players to stay submerged for extended periods under relatively comfortable conditions. Additionally, conduits emit light with a strength of 15 and deal damage to nearby hostile mobs. Overall, you won’t find a more useful item for building an underwater world in Minecraft Bedrock.
The Sea Guide is crafted from the heart of the ocean, encircled by eight nautilus shells. These materials are quite uncommon, so instead of gathering them on your own, you might consider reaching out to merchants or retrieving them from shipwrecks. As for the heart of the ocean, it can only be discovered in buried treasure chests.
Once you have crafted the ocean conduit, you cannot simply toss it into the water and wait for it to function. First, you need to activate it. To do this, you must construct a frame using prismarine, as illustrated in the image above. In the real world, underwater cities were once considered part of science fiction until recently. During the 1960s and 1970s, they appeared in movies, books, and television shows. Nowadays, instead of underwater cities, we can refer to space stations.
Humanity has yet to create an underwater city (what about Atlantis, though?), but there are small structures where people can work, relax, and even reside.
The most renowned underwater facility is likely SEALAB, developed by the U.S. Navy to advance deep-sea diving science and rescue operations. Several versions of it were constructed in the 1960s, with one notable moment being a phone call between a diver and President Lyndon Johnson. The diver was speaking from a helium-saturated environment that distorted his voice, leading to the interruption of the call.
Currently, there are several underwater laboratories. The MarineLab located in Florida is the oldest one, continuously operating since 1984 and serving both scientific research and educational purposes. Nearby, there’s another facility known as Jules’ Undersea Lodge, which has been transformed into a luxurious hotel featuring a cinema and even offers pizza delivery by divers. Over its 30 years of operation, it has welcomed 10,000 guests.
