Oh, my pumpkin! My spooky pumpkin!
The spookiest season of the year has once again arrived! No, it’s not just the last day before exams; it’s Halloween! During this time, we can unleash our creativity and dress up as various monsters, witches, and goblins to frighten adults into giving us plenty of candy (definitely not recommended on other days, as it won’t work). But really, is there anything scarier than cavities?
As the holiday approaches, many builders in Minecraft have decided to embrace the spirit by creating eerie yet beautifully enchanting themed projects. Here you can find haunted houses filled with ghosts, caves made from bones and skeletons inhabited by hundreds of hungry bats. However, for those of us who appreciate tradition, nothing captures the essence of Halloween quite like the classic, perhaps even old-fashioned, but undeniably elegant and simply delightful Jack-o’-lantern.
Builder Viza crafted a perfect, spooky pumpkin, just how we love it. He didn’t stop there and added a couple of smaller ones too. All his hard work paid off as Viza participated in the pumpkin carving contest on Planet Minecraft. The contest rules were clear: create a giant pumpkin without using any tools that would make the task easier, such as mods or texture packs for Minecraft. Everything had to be done solo.
“At first, I couldn’t even imagine what I was going to create. I wanted something interesting and creative, but what?” Viza shares.
But inspiration struck unexpectedly after he visited an artist friend. “I noticed a stunning still life that had been painted recently. It was absolutely perfect: autumn leaves, fruits, and vegetables—everything associated with fall, evoking thoughts of cozy nights around a campfire,” Viza explained.
Before starting his project, he laid out all his ideas on paper and then went online to search for inspiration to add maximum detail. Only after that did he begin building. Initially, the process was challenging due to the abundance of plants and organic structures, which are notoriously difficult to construct in Minecraft Pocket Edition, as they consist of numerous pieces, making it hard to envision the final result. Unlike beautiful symmetrical buildings.
“I tried countless methods to build the pumpkin,” Viza says. “But after some thought, I came up with an intriguing solution. Each pumpkin consists of several spheres arranged in a circle, which are then smoothed and adjusted to achieve the desired shape.” It certainly looks impressive, and the pumpkins took on a unique bulging appearance, but just imagine—it took Viza two whole weeks to complete this assembly!
Every detail is intentional. Together, they create a chilling atmosphere. For instance, autumn leaves drift through the air, candles and lanterns are scattered everywhere, old sagging cobwebs hang about, and one of the pumpkins even sports a witch’s hat! According to Viza, all these elements contribute to a mystical, mysterious ambiance. He put so much effort into it that if you look closely, you might spot a tiny spider living near the pumpkins.
In Minecraft Bedrock, there’s a downside regarding the limited color palette. To achieve the right colors, Viza used various materials that no one would typically consider for construction in real life. For example, the pumpkins are made from wool, concrete, and colored clay, while other details like candles and cobwebs utilize glass, wood, and glowstone. Oh, it truly evokes genuine creepy feelings.
“Building the pumpkins was incredibly enjoyable; I don’t regret spending so much time on this project. I believe the most ambitious and eye-catching part of my creation is the candles inside the pumpkins, along with the large pumpkin wearing a hat!” Viza states.
Well, without the candles, it would hardly qualify as a Jack-o’-lantern.
