The last time I attempted to create a sandcastle, I lifted the bucket, and a chunk of sand beneath it tumbled over. It was then washed away by the compassionate ocean. That moment felt like the lowest point in my life.
The most recent sandcastle that Teplight tried to construct was in the world of Minecraft Pocket Edition. This marked his initial effort, executed on a school computer. “It measured about 15×15, primarily made of sand,” he shared with me. “Inside, there was a river. Not a disaster, but still not great. It was quite basic.
As I browse through his latest creations, it seems that the term “basic” has been lost to the sands of time and is no longer applicable. These builds are intricate. They blend organic and inorganic elements seamlessly. They are fantastic and atmospheric, vibrant and playful. Some feature natural, smooth landscapes, while others boast perfect, meticulously rounded towers and spires. Moreover, there are countless of them!
I asked Teplight how he achieved this style in MCPE and what I could do to enhance my dull sandy constructions.
“Design and imagination are what shape your style,” Teplight explained. “When I build, I’m always looking for different angles, contrasts, proportions, layouts, trying to make everything fit together.”
When it comes to describing how he infuses atmosphere and emotion into his structures, Teplight finds it challenging to articulate. “The environment is one of the most crucial aspects of building,” he states, “You need to envision it.” Everything beyond that is hard to explain; it’s not a tangible object you either have or lack—it’s simply a feeling. “It’s mainly about colors,” he adds, “good contrast. Trees change everything. The atmosphere is magnificent only with good contrast.”
So, since that first sandcastle was built, along with Fairy Lands, Atlantis – Temple Of Poseidon, how has Teplight’s building strategy evolved?
“My approach has significantly changed as I’ve started constructing in a more organized manner,” he reveals.
“Design principles are very important in construction and layouts. I usually continue working in Minecraft PE only after establishing layout and design rules.”
Now, Teplight looks towards the future, where he hopes to continue building and designing beyond just Minecraft PE. “My skills keep improving,” he tells me, “and I’m still learning from others. Every time I see a project, I feel compelled to replicate it. You learn solely through practice. Currently, I’m studying architecture. Naturally, I’d love to pursue a career in design. I can’t say much yet, but I can express my excitement for what’s ahead!”
