You might be familiar with how most editors operate: when they’re not asked to brew an exquisite cup of coffee or fetch more photos of Spider-Man, they inevitably receive a task to write a story. So when our boss, Tom, informed me that the studio MineMakers, in collaboration with New Heaven, had created a horror map for Minecraft PE, I was skeptical.
But it turned out to be true. No big deal; I’ll just have to wear a sign saying “Idiot” and claim that LATE is a fantastic mod for Minecraft Pocket Edition.
Yet, I’m proud of that sign. The game has always been eerie. I vividly remember being terrified by the very first creeper I encountered. And LATE effectively taps into that fear: you wake up late for work, argue with your boss, and suddenly find yourself in a completely ghostly office building where everything feels distorted.
Experience the taste of terror:
The founder of the MineMakers team, Kil, shared that the group began working on this project back in April of last year. Two months were spent solely on conceptualizing the theme before construction commenced.
In reality, the actual building process took about a month. Most of the time, New Heaven focused on designing the streets.
Meanwhile, MineMakers meticulously crafted the office building, continuously refining and noting details. Let’s take a look at the office building.
By early August, the team started focusing on technical aspects and animations. According to Maxo6, many adjustments and significant changes were made during the final two weeks leading up to the release.
“Yes, as the title suggests, we were a bit behind schedule,” Maxo6 confides.
So where did the idea for the mod come from? “The concept stemmed from the story of a man who repeatedly loses his sanity. He develops dissociative identity disorder, meaning his personality splits, creating the impression that multiple individuals reside within one body. Thus, this creation represents a battle between sanity and madness, reason and fear.
When you start playing as the main character, Thomas, you quickly grasp what’s going on. Although the game kicks off with numerous surreal nightmares, who hasn’t experienced those? Thomas is fine!
However, things are not so straightforward. Most horror games instill dread right from the beginning and maintain a sense of unease throughout the narrative. But LATE seems to prepare the ground for subsequent horrifying events. First, at the outset, you’re late for work—a minor yet common anxiety for many people—and second, real troubles await you later…
The nightmare you experience can be seen as a brief trailer introducing you to the upcoming events.
Such an introduction through a dream seemed somewhat illogical to me, but as Buliks—one of the team members—points out, the primary purpose of this beginning was to create an atmosphere that disorients all players.
Buliks also noted that the protagonist’s tardiness was caused by the nightmare that left him utterly confused. Indeed, I should use such an excuse next time.
An intriguing detail or feature is the parking lot scene, where the main character must hide from a monster.
“We really wanted the parking episode to be the most intense and thrilling part of the entire storyline,” Maxo6 emphasizes.
If you pay close attention, you may notice that in the parking scene, the music is entirely removed to maximize tension.
And Maxo6 revealed a little secret to me—standing in the light significantly increases your chances of getting caught!
The map features four different endings, but the plot keeps players guessing until the very end!
“Some players didn’t fully grasp the essence of the map because they found several inconsistencies. Perhaps that’s our oversight, and after the release, we had plenty of ideas for improvements. For instance, a mirror could serve as an excellent tool to represent both reality and illusion.
Do you know that feeling when you realize you could have done better? Nevertheless, LATE became a project that greatly expanded the possibilities of Minecraft PE.
However, the team does not believe they have reached the limits of their capabilities, nor do they think that Minecraft PE is the ultimate platform without boundaries.
“The only limit for all of us is imagination. With a certain skill set and experience, anything is possible. Therefore, it’s crucial for every builder to develop not only their skills but also their mindset.
