In essence, I consider myself one of the boldest players in Minecraft. I possess the courage of a mighty lion and, naturally, I’m not afraid of a summoner. Pfft. A villager? I see it as just a simple villager who can use brute strength to hit you. A brave guy like me has no fears when it comes to this mob!
At least, that’s what I thought until the summoner called forth a vex. With a stream of pale smoke blinding your eyes, a cruel gray demon descends from the heavens. It is immune to fire and lava in Minecraft PE, capable of passing through any block. The vex attacks with a sword in hand, glowing red and ready to teach me a real lesson.
“We started discussing the creation of more hostile mobs, so we began sketching some ideas on paper, and then it became clear that a small humanoid form with wings was an intriguing concept. Essentially, it looked like a tiny malevolent angel or devil,” says Jens Bergensten.
The introduction of such an enemy that could summon hostile mobs in Minecraft PE had to be approached with caution. Thus, the vex remains close to its summoning point; if you run away from it, it will eventually perish in your absence—an intentional weakness designed to prevent your Minecraft world from being overrun by summoned mobs!
As for their ability to fly, Jens explains that this move was meant to stop players in MCPE from relying solely on old combat tricks: “I wanted to encourage players to advance rather than just retreat while striking at those approaching them, also keeping an eye out since they might be attacked from different angles.”
Soon, the vex gained even more abilities, such as charging its attacks to reach the player. “They will try to chase you while charging,” warns Jens. “So you’ll need to keep moving or strike them before they attack.” This creates a challenging combat scenario even for the bravest Minecraft player.
