Marceau is a self-taught creator whose primary goal is to craft incredible environments and structures in Minecraft Pocket Edition, designed to push you out of your comfort zone.
“It started as a personal exploration of cyberpunk themes,” says Marceau. “It’s simply a vision of an alternative future.” His work features many layers within buildings and constructions.
Marceau realized he wanted to expand this initial vision only after discovering a contest themed around human achievements in Minecraft. “I thought, ‘This is wonderful!’” he recalls.
“Awakening is the true achievement of humanity,” he continues, “and the essence of Awakening is the discovery of human civilization,” rather than any grander purpose.”
The core issue of Awakening lies in the darker side of human ambition. On one hand, it celebrates technological advancement with strong, sharp structures and beautiful color compositions. Yet on the other hand, there exists space: a part of nature we know the least about.
What’s even more intriguing is how he achieved such explosive effects in Minecraft PE? “Essentially, the purple explosion against matter, the detonation effect, is a blend of World Edit and Voxel Sniper. The purple blocks actually represent particles from the Nether portal that add a glowing texture, and it’s not just a solid block. I believe this was the best way to make the explosion visible amidst such a vibrant city. I had to combine this with several light sources to ensure it was well-lit at the center of the structure.”
While the smoothness of the Nether portal particles gave the explosion a radiant sense of dread, Marceau took it further. He introduced a feeling of volatility, kinetic energy, and the illusion of external movement by destroying his own creations.
“All the pieces flying towards the center,” explains Marceau, “like buildings being sucked into a vortex, were primarily broken down from existing structures. I had to rotate them and try to mimic the whirlpool effect. A multitude of debris swirling around made me very interested in depicting concepts like motion and suction… something that would convey a sense of action in a scene that is entirely still.”
Marceau began playing Minecraft Pocket Edition in July 2015 when he discovered the creative community through a competition. At that moment, he became captivated by the ability to create builds, share them, edit them, and mix different projects with others. “That’s basically how I got started,” he shares. “I just found it fascinating and met some like-minded individuals.”
Marceau expresses that this is a significant part of what he loves about the game. It’s not just a new venue for developing his creativity; he also enjoys the diversity of people and talents within the Minecraft Pocket Edition community.
So, what would the esteemed builder and budding artist say is the most important thing to consider when creating a build in MCPE?
“I think it’s not so much about how to build in Minecraft PE,” he states. “It’s more about expanding your overall knowledge and culture and simply observing the world. Think about it. Anything that can serve as inspiration is truly valuable. No matter what you use, I believe it all comes down to the same principle. Once you combine technical skills with your emotions and ideas, I think it can really become something greater. Being passionate is incredibly important.”
