One of the most incredible aspects of Minecraft is how you gradually enhance your skills and refine your craft. Piece by piece, map by map, what once was a small, shabby hut transforms into a grand, expansive villa. The unremarkable cobblestone is replaced with lush jungles, and those sandy blocks you tossed on the floor instead of a bed have vanished, making way for a proper, full-sized bed. Your tastes evolve, and you begin to grasp the intricacies of design.
All that I’ve mentioned above signifies a pivotal moment in every true player’s journey in Minecraft Pocket Edition, when they realize that their current creations are insufficient, not quite what they truly desire. In such moments, players diligently work to elevate their skills, taking their building quality to new heights. Perhaps it’s time to explore a completely fresh design? One that embodies style and luxury. I’m referring, of course, to constructing a robust castle made entirely of gold! Just kidding; I’m actually talking about modern architecture!
Let’s examine two of the most popular architectural styles in Minecraft Bedrock: contemporary and modern architecture. What sets them apart? Contemporary refers to the architecture of its time, utilizing innovative approaches and minimalist designs to create tomorrow’s home today! Meanwhile, modern architecture, despite its name, has roots dating back to the early 1920s, featuring heavy concrete structures like Fallingwater or Villa Savoye. Both styles fit seamlessly within the game.
“The reason why homes inspired by modern architecture and contemporary designs remain relevant in Minecraft might be because we build using square blocks,” says Andyisyoda, a professional YouTuber and budding architect known for his expertise in these two styles. “Many modern houses feature straight lines with minimal diagonal elements and large horizontal compositions. It’s as simple as arranging blocks in rows, adding a few windows while keeping it tidy to avoid cluttering the structure, along with some vertical features, and voilà, you’ve got something resembling a modern house.”
When he’s not featured in articles on Minecraft.net, Andy spends his time creating inspiring builds on his channel, including those in the modern architectural style. He began his creative journey in Minecraft, initially crafting traditional mansions before broadening his horizons to embrace modern projects back in 2014. With years of accumulated knowledge and experience, Andy has delved deep into architectural themes and now possesses a solid understanding of how things function.
“You can practice by observing real buildings and studying them. You can gather ideas or inspiration. Break down a structure into its components, analyze the floor plans, and try to replicate that in-game. Take a couple of photos or videos and get started. It’s excellent training.”
Andy may look at actual floor plans, photographs, and videos, but he never fully replicates them. He refrains from doing so because he doesn’t want to limit himself to existing designs; he craves originality. Sometimes, he borrows individual elements from a house, like the facade or layout, then refines them to develop his unique style.
Remember the second paragraph where I joked about a massive castle made entirely of gold? Well, even that castle would likely pale in comparison to one of Andy’s latest constructions. I think we can stop calling that golden wonder majestic.
“I spent over 20 hours live-streaming while building my version of the Bel Air mansion ‘The One.’ I couldn’t find any floor plans for it, so we had a blast designing the most outrageous house possible, complete with bowling alleys, a YouTube recording room, a cinema, tennis courts, and even a helipad! Despite being a whimsical creation, I still aimed to ensure the layout was sensible, offering great views from the rooms, suitable for wealthy inhabitants!”
Fortunately, you don’t need to be excessively rich to construct modern architecture in Minecraft! However, starting to build a modern-style home is far more challenging than merely discussing it. For players in creative mode, the block is just a few clicks away, but for survival players, gathering the necessary materials could take hours, and if you’re aiming for authenticity, you’ll need a lot of resources! So, as you can see, this task isn’t easy!
“Every experienced and skilled builder in Minecraft Bedrock always considers how they envision their home before beginning. This includes deciding which blocks to use during construction,” explains Andy. “I have one universal tip: stick to blocks like white concrete, light gray concrete, and stone—or similar—for walls. White and gray complement each other beautifully, especially when paired with some brown wood.”
[1/3] – Too bad I couldn’t borrow Andy’s brain before starting to build my own house…using Nether quartz!!!
[2/3] – Using concrete might not be the best approach, but only because it requires water to set.
[3/3] – Sand, gravel, and all good stuff—these were the chosen materials for creating perfect concrete blocks!
Gathering essential materials like concrete necessitates proximity to sand and gravel. To create concrete, you must mix these two ingredients—including the color you wish to dye the block—to produce concrete powder. Once you place the blocks, you need to add water to harden them. However, according to Andy, these builds can incorporate any color based on their surroundings.
“Bright white builds can stand out well in suburban settings, but if you have plenty of landscaping, you might opt for blocks that blend better. Choosing blocks closer to natural materials creates a calm and harmonious atmosphere. When constructing modern builds, you can utilize nearly any block; everything fits perfectly! I’ve seen black houses, white ones, red, entirely wooden, and even brutalist metal structures, and they all looked stunning. All you need is imagination! Add some colors!
I recall the last time I had to use my imagination. It was when one of my friends invited me to his house in Minecraft Pocket Edition. Oh, don’t get me wrong; it looked amazing from the outside! But as soon as we stepped inside, I saw that the walls were made of dirt. Apparently, “beautiful inside” doesn’t always pertain to a home’s design.
“I really dislike clutter in homes!” Andy states, much to my delight. “I prefer minimalist decor, open spaces, and stylish designs. I also appreciate elegant building materials that lend a ‘honest’ appearance to a home—in other words, you can appreciate the engineering solutions and material choices.”
After many years of building, rightfully considered an expert builder, Andy shared what he feels is lacking in development. He has created numerous homes and firmly believes that incorporating certain blocks would make a fantastic addition to Minecraft Bedrock, enhancing the game further. “Vertical slabs, glass panes, and layers of grass and coarse dirt. The standout item on this list is vertical slabs—they would be amazing for interior walls since regular blocks tend to be too thick for that purpose.”
[1/4] – Pro tip from Andy #1: Make your home as bright as possible, which can be achieved through courtyards, light wells, skylights, and large windows. You can also experiment with the shape of the building (like U-shaped or L-shaped) to allow for more windows and avoid areas where they can’t be placed.
[2/4] – Pro tip from Andy #2: Keep the largest rooms open-plan, whether it’s the kitchen, living room, or dining area.
[3/4] – Pro tip from Andy #3: Generally, use tall windows that stretch from floor to ceiling, and for fun, consider very narrow and low windows to create cozy spots.
[4/4] – Pro tip from Andy #4: Avoid texture connections, as they appear odd in Minecraft Pocket Edition.
Building a modern home in Minecraft is no small feat. It should be filled with light, spacious enough, and constructed with various necessary materials. One of Andy’s recent creations, “Phasans,” consists of 2800 polished granite blocks, 1500 smooth quartz blocks, 1300 light gray concrete blocks, and over 500 glass panels. But that’s not the only option if you ask Andy.
“A more modest modern house with two bedrooms that I found on my server contains 2000 snow blocks and 1500 jungle planks as primary materials.”
A total of 3500 blocks? I play in survival mode! How am I supposed to gather them all? I guess I know what I’ll be doing during the holidays. Returning to building dirty shacks doesn’t sound so bleak anymore…
