Diving into the ocean depths in Minecraft just got a lot more immersive with the Water Depth Fog mod for MCPE. This client-side mod enhances the aesthetic experience of exploring underwater, making the gameplay feel more authentic as you submerge into the ocean.
Discover the Depth Fog Experience
In the vanilla game, the underwater fog remains uniform, regardless of whether you’re merely a couple of blocks below the surface or plunging down hundreds of blocks. The Water Depth Fog mod completely transforms this experience: as you swim deeper beneath the waves, the fog becomes denser and darker, creating a genuine sensation of diving into the abyss.
This unique modification has no effect on gameplay mechanics, operates independently of servers, and can be seamlessly integrated with any existing mod pack. It pairs well with water pressure or damage mods, though these are not required for it to function.
How the Mod Works
The fog effects are calculated based on depth from the default sea level (Y=62). As players descend towards a configurable maximum depth (default set at 60 blocks), the underwater fog transitions smoothly:
- Fog Color: Transitions from a light blue-green hue near the surface to an almost pitch-black shade as you go deeper.
- Fog Distance: The near/far draw planes are adjusted, reducing visibility the further down you go.
This transition is a fluid linear blend between surface and deep values, eliminating any abrupt changes or flickering effects.
Submarine Awareness Feature
A noteworthy feature of the Water Depth Fog mod is its awareness when inside a Sable sub-level (which provides a dry, air-filled environment reminiscent of submarine interiors). By default, the deep-ocean fog effect is disabled in these areas to ensure a clear and unobstructed view. This setting can, however, be turned on or off through the configuration options.
Custom Configuration Options
The mod offers a fully customizable client-side configuration file (depthfog-client.toml) to tailor the experience:
seaLevel— Defines the Y level considered as the surface (default is 62).maxDarkenDepth— Sets the depth at which the fog reaches its maximum density (default is 60 blocks).surfaceFogRed/Green/BlueanddeepFogRed/Green/Blue— Controls the color gradient blend from surface tint to deep water shade.surfaceNearPlane/FarPlaneanddeepNearPlane/FarPlane— Dictates the fog distance blending for surface and deep areas.skipInsideSableSubLevels— Allows toggling of the fog effect in Sable submarines (default is enabled).
Installation Requirements
The Water Depth Fog mod requires only NeoForge; there are no additional mod dependencies, including Create. Integration with Sable is optional and will only be utilized if it is already installed.
