The majority of the city of Pripyat is accurately represented on the map, mirroring the original layout of its buildings. The map features numerous large Soviet-style constructions, including the Palace of Culture “Energetik,” the “Polesie” Hotel, and even a Ferris wheel!

A Bit of History:

Established on February 4, 1970.

Pripyat was granted city status in 1979 based on the resolution of the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR No. 1264/686.

The primary reason for the city’s establishment was the construction and subsequent operation of one of Europe’s largest nuclear power plants, Chernobyl, which became the backbone of the city and earned it the title of an atomic city. Pripyat was the ninth atomic city in the Soviet Union.

According to the last census conducted before evacuation (in November 1985), the population stood at 47,500 people, representing over 25 nationalities. At that time, the annual population growth exceeded 1,500 individuals, including around 800 newborns and approximately 500-600 newcomers relocating from various regions of the Soviet Union.

The projected initial population was estimated to be between 75,000 and 78,000 residents.

The nearby Yanov railway station on the Chernihiv-Ovruč line, a river port on the Pripyat River, and roadways transformed Pripyat into a convenient transportation hub within Polesia.

The inhabitants of Pripyat were evacuated on April 27, 1986, due to the Chernobyl disaster. A new satellite town, Slavutych, was constructed 50 km away from the nuclear plant for the staff residing there. Currently, Pripyat lies within the Chernobyl exclusion zone, administratively part of the Ivankiv district in Kyiv Oblast.

Following the disaster, decontamination efforts were undertaken in the city, resulting in a significant reduction of radiation levels. Nowadays, excursions to Pripyat are infrequently organized.
